Matt Laurie keen to bust city hoodooHerald Sun - December 02, 2011 MATT Laurie is happy with his success in the country, but would like to end a frustrating run of outs in the city, either at Moonee Valley tonight or Caulfield tomorrow. In the country, Laurie has saddled up 11 winners in 34 starts, a strike rate of 32.35 per cent, which is the best of the top 30 trainers on the premiership table. By contrast, he has had 16 starts in the city for two seconds, three thirds and three fourths. Last weekend the trainer's three city runners were all placed and this weekend he will again have three starters. At Moonee Valley, Laurie has The Counterfeiter in the Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge and Banner in the $100,000 Moreton Hire Premium Handicap (1600m). Tomorrow he has The Big Steel in the Carpet Call Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield. "We are going well in the bush and we've been around the mark in town," Laurie said. He was setting The Big Steel for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but had to change his plans after a setback. "I have a big opinion of him and wanted to test him out at a higher level, but it didn't happen," Laurie said. "I think he's in a good race at Caulfield and think he's a great chance." The Big Steel returned to racing with a fifth behind Under The Eiffel at Betfair Park in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes. Laurie said The Counterfeiter deserved to break through and Banner had impressed with his two wins. Last season, Laurie trained seven city winners. Laurie's two-year-old, The Travelling Man, who finished fourth in the Debutant Stakes at Caulfield, is back in work being prepared for the Blue Diamond Stakes. Another two-year-old, Lamingtons, who ran two placings at her first two runs, will be back in work next month. You too could know the feeling of owning a winning racehorse - enquire now! THE BIG STEEL STRIKES AGAIN AT FLEMINGTON Once again The Big Steel took charge and was a winner in the RSL Plate, 2000m at Flemington - Monday April 25th, 2011 The Big Steel headed to WarrnamboolBy AAP Monday, April 25, 2011 - 6:24 PM
Consistent gelding The Big Steel has scored a timely win at Flemington ahead of next month's Warrnambool Cup. Trained by Matt Laurie, The Big Steel ($16) posted his sixth win in 17 starts in Monday's RSL Plate, beating another Warrnambool Cup rival Tinamou by three-quarters of a length. In doing so, The Big Steel foiled a betting plunge on Tinamou who was spectacularly backed from $31 to $15. Gold In Dubai ($51) tried to lead all the way and battled to the line well in third place. The Big Steel is unbeaten at Flemington having won there over 1800 metres on Oaks Day in November last year. "It just shows he needs a big track," Laurie said. The Big Steel tracked Gold In Dubai all the way and as soon as the field for turned for home he looked as if he would win. "You could see a long way out he was going to get there," Laurie said. "He is a horse who will keep winding up and doesn't get there in a hurry." He said the extra distance should be ideal in the $150,000 Warrnambool Cup (2350m) on May 5. "He has won over 2100 metres and obviously he can race on the pace so I think it will suit him," Laurie said. "He gets through slow going, maybe not real heavy, but it's certainly worth the punt taking him down there." "It should be fun." Jockey Ben Melham likes The Big Steel as a Cup horse. "He tries really hard and is a really strong staying horse," Melham said. He said he liked his adaptability in a race and his ability to switch off. "You can press him out of the barriers and when you rest him he really comes off the bridle," Melham said. "He doesn't spend an ounce more than he has to." DEVILENKO YOU BEAUTY! Devilenko outclassed the field in the W & M Cabinets Handicap (0-62) at Cranbourne on Sunday 17th April 2011 ridden by Ben Melham. Jumping well from the outside barrier, Devilenko took the lead early and remained there for the entirety of the race. After covering more ground than the rest of the field, Devilenko passed the post with a comfortable 2 and ½ lengths margin. Well done and congratulations to Matt Laurie and the owners. The 3yo heading out as favourite certainly didn't disappoint her owners and punters alike. Won in grand style there are big things ahead of her. Don't miss out on our next horse - enquire now! BIG STEEL SHINES UNDER LIGHTS The Big Steel had a gutsy win on Friday night under lights at Moonee Valley. Over an unsuitably short distance and tight track for this scopy gelding, we were all suitably impressed to see his class prevail with a victory. Ben Melham gave every opportunity and steered him home. Next stop further ground!

The lightly raced four year old beat home Invincible Miss by two lengths with Fiery Flirt further back. Devilenko, ridden by Ibrahim Gundogdu, justified his $1.40s and took his record to three starts for one win, a second and a third." Don't miss out on our next horse - enquire now! What a gutsy run by The Big Steel today at Ballarat. Beaten by a good length at the 200m mark Big Steely found a whole new level and desire to win. Storming home on the rail to tough it out and get there on the line, the 1600m really suited him after his last two starts over 1400m. Great day for the owners who were all there to cheer him home!
